Singing and Signing

Baby singing and signing classes are lots of fun and aid your babies development in various ways. These classes are aimed to teach you some simple signs to use with your baby to enhance their communication skills (thus reducing frustration for you and your baby) and for you to enjoy together. Babies naturally use signs and gestures to interact and communicate. We will learn how to utilise this ability to enable communication sooner than might otherwise happen.

I teach Makaton as it is based on British Sign Language and is the system most often taught in Primary and Special Education settings within the UK. We learn the signs through play and motivational songs. Music and games, of course, also aids baby development and participation. Classes are suitable for babies from 4 to 14 months.

"Me and my son attended the sing and sign classes and we had a wonderful time. Fiona is so good with the babies and makes everyone feel so welcome and at ease. I can now communicate with my little one and he can tell me things like food, drink, more, finished, change and signs along to songs. Baby signing has many benefits and can be helpful in boosting communication and aiding comprehension. Infants who learn to sign also are thought to gain psychological benefits, such as improved confidence and self-esteem. Some of the benefits of baby signing include:

Supports communication and interaction. Signing can help you understand your baby's needs, wants and thoughts. A lot of frustration can be eliminated as they are able to communicate and be understood.
Promotes language skills. Your baby has the ability to start understanding language and how it works before they actually have the physical ability to say anything. Sign language promotes this development by giving the baby the ability to communicate via signing and a way to practice language and vocabulary.
Encourages the development of speech.
Facilitates the understanding of emotions.
Creates feelings of satisfaction and accomplishments. The baby or toddler is proud of themselves when they achieve something and this achievement happens when a baby is learning signs, thus it can build their confidence and sense of autonomy.
Rewarding and aids bonding. Signing encourages bonding due to increased attention and eye contact. The songs and signs are shared activities to engage with together.
Fun and aids development. The singing and games are fun and encourages intellectual development.
Social experience. Being in a class with other babies as well as time for a cuppa and interaction with others after the class encourages social development.
Stimulating your baby's intellectual development. In being able to communicate sooner, brain development may be stimulated and enhanced.

Upcoming classes and information

There are upcoming classes in Findhorn this Spring.

A six week block begins in The Sunshine Room in Findhorn begins on Wednesday, Sept 11th at a cost of £70 (discounts are available).

Classes begin at 11am and we share tea and snacks afterwards before finishing by 12.30.
