Technology free evenings

You only need to step onto the street, inside a cafe or even into a friend's home to see how much we rely on our phones, computers and ipads.  This technology is everywhere and is taking us away from the joy of the present moment.  And unfortunately it is so seductive, that it often goes unnoticed!

Last night my partner and I consciously chose to have a technology free evening.  Though I don't consider myself a huge computer user and rarely watch tv, it was somewhat surprising to see how much I missed the screens! There were a couple of moments where I caught the compelling draw to the computer... there may be people trying to get in touch with me or wouldn't it be useful to know the weather forecast for the weekend.

It proved to be a really rewarding and joyful experience having an evening without gadgets.  We spent some time gently gazing at the awesome open fire.  I certainly was more present and centred than I might otherwise have been. We spent time chatting and exploring issues that were beneficial for us both to discuss and we connected deeply.  It certainly helped us both to slow down, empty our minds and feel close.

This morning I decided to leave the computer off for the morning, though when noon came, I felt drawn to have a bath rather than re-engage with the computer screen.  I felt more able to follow the flow of what felt right in that moment.  Technology free evenings will become a regular feature in our week :)  I found this video that illustrates the point!

I love this Fiona. It's inspiring and something that most people could really benefit from. I was just talking about having some technology free time myself! It's amazing how dependent I've become on it - even though I don't have TV and am hardly ever have my mobile phone on.
Thanks for your inspiration!

Ahh Fiona, I have just had a similar exploration. The difference it made to my children and i when we had a screen free day at the weekend was awesome - like you I felt more connected, more in flow, able to follow the subtle messages - beautiful.
And since exploring this, now I am able to be much more conscious with it :-)

I have also been aware of the need for earthing in between screen time; it feels so much more prevalent, necessary right now. After walking on grass barefoot I feel restored, back to feeling true. Barefoot on grass takes more concerted effort for me now it is colder though, needing to soften through the coldness. So I have been contemplating an earthing mat, not sure still feeling it out for the mo though.

Thank you for sharing this topic and for your beautiful website - what a blessing.

With lots of love xxx

Thank you so much Michelle, I'm just back from a beautiful walk in the Glen and recognize the importance of grounding in between "screen time". I didn't quite go barefoot, though did enjoy when muddy water got in my boots!!! I often will spend some time sitting on or under a tree!

I think it's wonderful that you had a technology free day with your children, how inspiring! Your children are blessed to have such an awesome mum.

With much love to you, Fiona

I love how when you make a choice that is inspired by the soul, the Universe aligns and meets you there. The following evening we walked to a concert in nearby Roslin Chapel. It was a renaissance band and the chapel was in candlelight, so again the absence of technology. The concert was a delight, beautiful song and music from the middle ages. We then returned home to some creative explorations and weren't even tempted by the screen :)

That video is a bit horrifying in that I can see myself there!! I've put myself on a 'communication free' retreat in the past, and clearly it's time to do it again. I noticed that I slept much better when I was without technology.
Thanks for posting this Fiona, and - great website!!

Thanks for the comment Cynthia. I like the idea of a "communication free" retreat. I'm doing a house sit at a friends in January and have a mini retreat planned for myself! Interesting that you noticed you sleep better, I definitely notice I am calmer when use technology less.
